Contact Lenses

A complete guide

Contact lenses are made out of a soft plastic, which feels like a moisture rich gel material. This material is called a hydrogel.

Contact lenses fit directly on the front surface of your eye called the cornea. They correct your vision the same way as your glasses. Both glasses and contact lenses bend the light coming into the eye onto the retina allowing you to see clearly.

Contact lenses can be used to correct your vision to include:

  • Short sightedness – when you can’t see objects in the distance clearly
  • Long sightedness – when you can’t see close objects clearly
  • Astigmatism – when your eye has a rugby ball shaped curvature
  • Presbyopia – when close objects become difficult to see due to age-related changes to the crystalline lens and surrounding muscles.

Contact lenses made out of hydrogel material are breathable and comfortable. These lenses allow oxygen through them and into your eyes, to keep your eyes healthy as well as looking and feeling fresh.

There are many different types of contact lenses to include daily, two weekly and monthly. Your optometrist will help you choose the contact lens to best suit your eyes, vision and lifestyle.
