Laser Eye Surgery

Whether you are running competitively, with your local club, or simply to keep fit, the correct eye wear is vital.  Having the best frame fit and lens option will help reduce eye fatigue and boost concentration.  Running glasses will allow perfect vision in all weather conditions.

Types of corrective laser eye surgery.

The three most common types of laser surgery are:

  1. LASIK – Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis

This is the most common procedure.  It involves the surgeon creating an ultra-thin flap of tissue from the over covering (epithelium) of the eye, using a laser.  The exposed surface is then reshaped using the exclimer laser and then the flap is replaced.

  1. LASEK – Laser Assisted Sub-epithelial Keratectomy

This is almost identical to LASIK, except the ultra-thin flap of tissue is created manually by the surgeon, rather than using a laser.

This is often used to treat individuals whose corneas are too thin for LASIK and those who have extremely active lifestyles.

  1. PRK – Photorefractive keratectomy

PRK is the predecessor to LASIK. Again, this is similar to both of LASIK and LASIK. With the PRK procedure the ultra-thin flap of tissue is removed and discarded, prior to reshaping the corneal tissue. The epithelium (flap of tissue) regenerates, growing back over the surface of the cornea a few days after surgery.

Your optician will be able to explain in more detail the benefits of each type of laser surgery, and recommend which would be most suitable for you.
