Handling contact lenses for the first time can seem quite daunting and intimidating. Many people feel apprehensive about the process of inserting something into their eyes, which is entirely understandable. However, our trained optometrists and optical assistants are here to guide you through each step of the process, ensuring you feel comfortable and confident. They will not only demonstrate the correct techniques but also provide hands-on assistance and answer any questions you may have.

After practising a few times under their guidance, it won’t be long before the entire process becomes second nature to you. With some patience and practice, you will find that handling contact lenses becomes an easy and routine part of your daily life.

To further aid you, our optometrists have created a detailed guide to help you insert your contact lenses safely, comfortably, and hygienically. This guide is designed to walk you through each step methodically, making the process as smooth as possible.

How to Put Your Contact Lenses In:

  1. Wash Your Hands Thoroughly:
    • Begin by washing your hands thoroughly. We recommend using antibacterial soap wash to ensure your hands are free from any germs or contaminants. Dry your hands with lint-free towels to avoid any particles sticking to the lenses.
  2. Prepare Your Area:
    • Find a clean surface in a well-lit area where you have access to a mirror. It is preferable to sit down in front of the mirror for stability. Place a tissue or soft towel on the table in front of you; this will help in case you accidentally drop the contact lens, making it easier to retrieve.
  3. Open and Inspect the Lens:
    • Carefully open the contact lens package or case. Before proceeding, check the contact lens to ensure it is the correct way around.
  4. Develop a Routine:
    • Try to get into the habit of putting the same lens into your eyes first every time. For instance, always start with your right eye. This routine helps ensure that you put the correct lens in each eye, especially if you have different prescriptions.
  5. Position the Lens:
    • Now, place the contact lens on the tip of your index finger. Make sure your finger is dry to prevent the lens from sticking to it.
  6. Check Orientation:
    • Examine the edges of the contact lens. If the edges flare out, resembling a bowl with a lip, it means the lens is inside out.
  7. Correct Inside Out Lens:
    • If the lens is inside out, put it on the palm of your hand and add a few drops of saline solution or contact lens solution. Gently massage the lens to turn it the right way round.
  8. Check for Damage:
    • Before inserting the lens, check for any damage or tears. Never use a damaged lens as it can harm your eye.
  9. Insert the Lens:
    • Look straight into the mirror. With the hand holding the lens, use your middle finger to pull down your lower eyelid and eyelashes. Use the other hand to hold your upper eyelid and eyelashes firmly against your brow.
  10. Create Space:
    • By pulling both the upper and lower eyelids, you create enough space for the contact lens to sit on your eye comfortably.
  11. Position the Lens:
    • While watching in the mirror, slowly bring the index finger holding the contact lens to the centre of your eye. Alternatively, you can place the lens on the white part of your eye if that feels easier.
  12. Set the Lens:
    • Once the lens is on your eye, before releasing your eyelids, try to move your eyes around by looking in different directions. This helps to clear any air bubbles that might be trapped under the lens.
  13. Adjust:
    • Slowly release both the upper and lower eyelids. Blink a few times to help centre the lens and to achieve comfortable vision.
  14. Repeat for the Other Eye:
    • Once you are ready, repeat the same procedure for the other eye.
